HAY BEATS PURDY

AUCKLAND, -Sept. 9
The professional welter-weight boxing contest between Artie Hay, of Hastings, the New. Zealand champion (10.10) and Charlie Purdv, of Auckland (10.3.)) concl\id§dv#t v ; the yend- of the fifth round to-night, Purely being unable to continue/ owing to his having sustained a broken rib. The Town Hall was crowded for the bout, and the spectators were very disappointed at the sudden termination of the contest.
Hay did practically all of the attacking, and he was well ahead on points. In fact it looked ns though he might have won hy knock-out. Hay has now challenged Jim Broadfoot for the light heavy-weight title.
