AUSTRALIAN PICTUREGRAMS

, (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, Sept. 9. Picture^rams,' transmitted in Australia, were exchanged between Sydney and Mel bourne to-day. The evening papers here have to-night published illustrations received through the medium of a special apparatus' that has been, installed by the Postal Department. One Imlfage picture, among those published was that of a crowd of peo : pie on route to business outside the 'Flinders Street Railway Station, in Melbourne. This was developed and lodged at the post office, and hnlf-an-liour later the picture was completed in Sydney and was ready for the newspaper process block-maker. While the detail of the picture was necessarily somewhat blurred, the pictures give a very fair reproduction of the original. The “picturcgranis” or “pbotograms,” as they are variously willed, included not only newspaper illustrations, but also advertisements, fingerprints, and documents. It is expected tliat the system will be particularly valuable to the policein Tracing criminals. The system will operate only between Sydney; . and Melbourne for the. present. FURTHER, features. ' LATER. A reproduction of .the leading article in this morning’s Melbourne “Argus” is published in this afternoon’s editions of the Sydney “Sun.” Every word is readable. The article makes three-quarters of a column. Pioturegrams of Sydney’s crowds going to work have boon sent to Melbourne by the same process.
