INTER-CLUB DEBATE

CHALLENGE CUP CONTEST. What was indeed a most enjoyable function was that held at St. Mary's Club : Rooms last evening when representatives of the young ladies and men of St. Mary’s Literary Club met in debate. .There was a very iative audience and throughout the f evening was thoroughly enjoyed. More than the usual interest was taken in the contest as there was at stake a silver;cup, a handsome trophy donated by Mr and Mrs J. L. Turner for annual competition among the members. The subject of the debate, namely, “That Country Life is pre- , .ferablp to that of the Town,”’ was well chosen, ns therein ■ was, contained much matter for thought and as a consequence some splendid speeches . resulted. The ladies took the affirma/tive and the men the negative. Prior to the debate Mr J. Hutchison, President of St. Mary’s Debating Club extended a welcome to ladies wishing them every success in J the contest, though he hoped they would have to show a good fight for the trophy. The debate then took place, and was followed throughout with ‘ interest. The various speakers acquitted themselves well and are •' to he commended for their splendid efforts. At the conclusion of the debate the judging took place, prior ito which Mr G. Wormington, whose knowledge in debating matters is a .very, wide one, gave a valuable criticism. Eachspeaker in turn was dealt with by the said gentleman and .much, benefit will be derived from his advice. The judge, Mr* W, Jeffries, then gave his decision. In summing up he said the ladies gave a far better showing than .the men in. that their speeches were superior and . they showed much preparation and forethought on the subject. He had much pleasure in declaring them .the. winners,- the points gained being, ladies 370, men 343. Mr J. Turner was then called on to present the cup and in doing socongratulated the victors on their success. . ' ' .■• :• Congratulatory' speeches then fol-j lowed by Rev. Father McKay, Messrs W.
