.By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, September 6. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. Sir Robert Stout moved that in the opinion of the Council, considering the waste of food and means and physical and moral injury to people caused by the consumption of alcoholic liquors, steps should he taken by the Government, to discourage such consumption, and to pass such a law as will prevent the Public Trustee being a brewer or vendor of such liquors. The motion was defeated by 23 to 6. The Council adjourned at 3.50 until next Wednesday. ;

The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m.

The Unemployed Workers’ Bill (Mr Fraser) was read a first time. New Plymouth Borough Council Empowering Bill (Mr Smith) was read a second time.

Consideration of the estimates in Committee of Supply was resumed and the first item (Legislative Department, £B9,Bo6)"was passed. The House rose at 10.30 a.m.
