SCHNEIDER CUP
PRACTICE TRIALS. (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON, September 4. To-day was one of the most thrilling at. Calshot since practice began. The Super-Marine S 6 failed to rise from the water with a full load of petrol. When it reach a high, taking-off speed, the machine wobbled badly on the floats and also failed with smaller floats. Three attempts proved fruitless. Britain is therefore faced with a takmg off difficulty as far as S 6 machines are concerned.
Another thrill was provided when another S 6 descending, headed direct towards a tug. Vain attempts were made to alter the course. The mechanics climbed out of the cockpit and stood on the floats from where they were able to fend the machine off, a wing being slightly damaged.
ITALY’S BID FOR RECORD.
LONDON, September 4
Italy is determined not to lose the world’s air speed ’record, even if she cannot win the Schneider Cup. As the corners of the Schneider Cup course are regarded as too dangerous for Italy’s “ Saroia ” double-engined machine, and the so-called egg-plane, these may be used after the race in an effort to attain a world’s record for a straight mile on the long course. In case of any crashes on Saturday the navy is providing boats with divers and diving apparatus.
