for four days against a southerly wind.” * Admiral Evans said that one of the party went one ahead and reached the base where there was a doctor. “I told the King about this,” said the admiral, “and he gave both these men the Albert medal for helping me to win through.”. “WAITED FOR DEATH.” Admiral Evans added that when Captain Scott and his party “nobly waited for death” they were only eleven miles from a depot where there was food for a large party for six weeks. The admiral was only a lieutenant in 1912, and he had the sad task of bringing back to civilisation the news of his achievement and final disaster of Ins leader, Captain Scott, and his four companions of that last dash to the Pole.' During the war, Rear-Admiral Evans gained undying fame for his participation in the action at Zeeruggee, when units of the British Navy were sunk at the entrance of the Zeebruggee harbour to bottle up the submarine base of the Germans there. Admiral Evans was then in command of the destroyer Broke, and for his part in the action, which earned him .merited promotion, he has ever since been known as “Evans of the Broke.” As commander of the Royal Australian Navy he directed, as one of his first acts after taking over command, the recent manoeuvres of the combined Royal Australian Navy and units attached to the New Zealand base, .near-Admiral Evans has made a distinct impression in Sydney since his arrival and has brought the Navy well into the public eye.
