Mr McGregor reported on the result of tlie Conference with W.C.R.U. at Greymouth, which it was hoped would have satisfactory results.—Received. it was resolved that all lists in aid of' injured player be handed "in and closed on Sept. 9th. BANFURLY SHIELD. SOUTHLAND UNION. WANTS NO CHALLENGES THIS season. (By Telegraph—Press Association). INVERCARGILL, Sept. 2. At a meeting of the Executive of the (Southland Rugby Union this evening, a telegram was read from the South Canterbury Union, stating that it desired to challenge for. the Ranfurly Shield, the game to be played on September 11. •“This matter requires careful consideration,” said the Chairman, Mr A. H. Stott. “Our team has been on an extended tour and has suffered a number of casualties. It seems hardly reasonable that we should be expected to play.” Mr A. J. Geddes said that the team was arriving home the day before the date suggested. The cluih competitions had still to be finished. Hie| suggested that the New Zealand Union ha advised of the circumstances and notified that the Southland Union did not . feel prepared to accept any challenge till next season.
It was decided to receive the telegram,. and advise the New Zealand Union of the position.
REFEREE QUESTION. AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. At a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association, the Secretary was instructed to write to the Executive of the N.'Z. Rugby Referees’ Association, asking what reason, if any, oan be given by its representative on .the Appointments Committee for the Auckland referees "receiving only three appointments by that body during. the past 16 years, and also what steps the Executive lias taken to ensure that the Auckland referees are to he aipnjointM for further New Zealand Rugby Union matches. ‘ > It , was decided to write to Mr H. J. McKenzie, congratulating him on Ills display as referee in the Canter-bury-Auckland match' last Saturday. WAIKATO BEAT CANTERBURY. HAMILTON, Sept. 2. Waikato defeated Canterbury. by 21 points to 17. For Waikato the scorers of tries were Anderson (2) and Kemp. Three penalties were kicked by Halstead, and a goal from a mark by Kemp. For Canterbury, tries were scored bv Scrimshaw (2t), Mullan, Hart, and Merritt. The last-named converted one try. . SYDNEY, Sept. 2. By defeating Northern Suburbs by 19 to 8, in the final of tlie Schute Shield, Western Suburbs won the Rugby Union premiership. PRINCE OF WALES CUP. Tlie Prince of Wales Cup, which was presented by His Royal Highness to the Maori team when on tour in Great Britain in 1926 for annual competition between Maori teams in New Zealand will be competed for at Wellington on September 11. The present holders of the cup are Tai Hauauru, whose district embraces Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawhenua, and Wairarapa. The challengers are Tai Rawhiti, who hail from Hawke’s Bay ..Poverty Bay, and the East Coast. The Maoris can muster many noted players and the match for the Prince of Wales Cup should provide some attractive Rugby.
