TAXATION REMITTED
EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND,
WELLINGTON, August 30
Government taxation will be remitted on the trotting meeting held in Auckland on Saturday in aid of the earthquake relief funds. ’ The concession was finally agreed to on Friday by the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in his capacity as Minister of Stamp Duties, following representations by Mr G. Baildon, Mayor of Auckland, who pointed out practically that the Governmeint’s agreement to forgo its taxation would greatly assist the success of the meeting, for which all assistance was being voluntarily given. In view of the worthiness of the cause ,there would be no free admissions, members’ complimentary tickets having been abolished.
The Prime Minister said that there was not statutory authority for granting the remission of taxation, but in deference to the representations, he would make the concession, which would require to be validated by legislation.
