Jean Taris was seized with appendicitis, and to-day’s swimming match between him and Arne Borg lias been postponed indefinitely. NEW YORK SWIMMER. NEW YORK, August 31. A Toronto message states that Edward F. Keating, of New York, won the big swimming contest there, and the first prize of 25,000 dollars. Ernest Vierkootter was second and won 5000 dollars. THE MARATHON SWIM. / 280 COMPETITORS. WINNER’S GREAT FINISH. OTTAWA, Aug. 31. At Toronto, Edward Keating, the young New Yorker, won the filteen miles Wrigley swim prize of five thousand sterling. There were 280 starters, of whom scores failed to finish in the cold lake. An Ontarian named Norman Ross ,led for three-quarters of the race. Then Keating came 1 up from fifth place. Keating literally swept past all of the opposition. Ross retired. Vierkoetter, last year’s winner, a German baker, pluckilv fought to the finish with Keating. Keating maintained his lead and won by 100 yaids.
