BOXING

SATURDAY’S FINALS.

GREYMOUTH, Sept. 2

The N.Z. Amateur Boxing Championships concluded on Saturday night. The Town Hall held a record crowd, even standing room being at a premium The bouts were uniformly good, and at times the hall was rocked with the noise of tlve‘spectators. The decisions were well received in all but two of the contests, namely the Purdie-Knopp and the Gardner-Campbell bouts. In the first case, pandemonium reigned when the announcer stated that Purdie was the winner, and it was several minutes Indore order was restored. The fight itself was a good one, and Knopp appeared to- have won by his aggressiveness. In the Gardnea’-Cajiipibell fight, the decision also met with a mixed reception, hut Gardner deserved it, his left giving him the advantage. One of the most scientific exhibitions seen locally was that given by H. Johns in his bout against W. Leckie. Leckie ' had the advantage in the first round, but in the ensuing rounds Johns’ masterly’ display never left the issue in doubt. P. J. Stone had little difficulty in retaining lib-welter-weight title, his reach and height giving lnm a strong pull over L. Adamsui.

Duringutlie evening, Mr A. Behan thanked the- audience for their attendance, and announced, admist cheering that the record established by Greymouth in 1921, for both attendance arid the-number of fights, had been surpassed on tlie present occasion. The takings reached the 1921 total by some £6O.

Only one fight was finished by the short route, W. Carey, in the final of the light-weight, knocking out H. Thomas in ’the third round', up to which the Wellington maii was putting up a good showing against the hard-bitting Canterbury amateur.

The foil owing are the new champions :
