UNDER PECULIAR CIRCUMSTANCES.
(Australian Press Association)
SYDNEY, Aug. 30
The police daily receive intimations of people disappearing in the city or its environments, . some as a result of private unhappiness. Some of the wanderers return in a few days, others are found by the police. Three recent cases, however, possess mysterious characteristics.
A Roseville resident, Edward Clifford Treloar, an inspector of a large business firm, with branches in all the suburbs, left his North Sydney premises at mid-day on Wednesday, ostensibly for lunch, and has not been seen since. He recently suffered from influenza ahd complained of tiredness, v/therwise he was not worried. Two puzzling cases led the police to drag the Hawkesbury river for several days past. Frederica* Walter Broadhurst, of Roseville, a city business man, was returning from a business visit to ’New rcas'tle. He broke the journey at Brooklyn, on the Hawkesbury, where he hired a rowing boat, and has never been seen again, but the boat was picked up at sea. In it were four shillings and a note explaining this is to pay for the return of the boat to the owner. The third man was Henry Jacobs, retired, who resided with his family at Danger Island, in Hawkesbury river. He left Brooklyn in a la.un.cli which be owned. He was supposed to return to his island home, but be never arrived and both man and launch have completely vanished.
