BOXING
BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS.
GREYMOUTH, August 30
The New Zealand Amateur Boxing Championships commenced last night. The Town Hall was filled to capacity by boxing votaries from all parts of the ' country, proving that the amateurs are equally as good a draw as the professional 'boxers. The fighting on the wlnle was very interesting, though the bantam and featherweight sections were somewhat disappointing. The heavier classes, however, made up for this, and some of the big men proved their ability in no uncertain manner. The best display of the evening was given by the Canterbury man, W. Carey, who defeated H. Oxley (Manawatu) in,, the lightweights. Carey is a fast, hard hitting boxer, who is a good crowd pleasor. None of the Coast boxers were successful, although T. Dudley put up a good go against a clever boxer in Johns (Auckland), and H. Lister also gave his opponent, Nichol (Southland), a lot of trouble.
