MANAGER APPOINTED

BLENHEIM, August 29,

J. W. Marshall, from thirty applicants from all over the Dominion, was appointed manager of the Waitolia Dairy Factory. Marshall is at present first assistant of the Opunake Dairy Factory.

FIRE AT TIMARU. TIMARU, August 29. A ‘two storeyed eight roomed wooden house in Wauti Road, owned by ,T. Fraser, was badly damaged by fire at noon, the upper storey and contents being entirely destroyed. The house was unoccupied. Insurances on the building were £1250 in the South British. SEA UAL CASE’S. GISBORNE, Aug. 29. Another collapse of a prosecution occurred at the Supreme Court in the ease of Joe Edwards, otherwise known as Paorate Arawliariki, charged with incest. The first witness, the daughter of the prisoner, against, whom the offence was allegedly committed, proved so contradictory in her testimony that Judge MacGregor ordered the jury to bring in a verdict of not guilty. This was done, and the. prisoner was discharged. William Henry Give, on two charges of carnal knowledge, was found guilty, and was remanded for sentence.

FARMER FOUND GUILTY

After three days’ hearing, Herbert Henry Ellis, aged 28, farmer, of Te Kniti, was found guity of stealing 58 slieep belonging to William hyA recommendation to mercy was made on account of the fact that the sheep strayed on to his property, and he did not deliberately set out to steal them. ' Sentence was postponed.

AFTER HOURS

INVERCARGILL, Aug. 28

Several shopkeepers were before the Court on charges of selling tobacco after hours, and failing, to notify the inspector that they. sold\tobacco. Fines ranging from £3 to £5 were imposed.

Counsel for the defence claimed that the docket was [issued simply as a guide to the delivery man, indicating that the goods.Jiad....h<?en paid for. The Magistrate said that he must conclude the docket constituted a receipt as the amount of the sale and the name of the vendor appeared for the customer’s information.
