MAIL-BAGS STOLEN
CONTENTS RANSACKED. AUCKLAND, August 2G. A Jofkocl mail container at the Netherton Post OtFico was broken open (luring the week-end, two bags of mail being stolen and letters opened. It is not known yet what the loss is. The two bags; one fronv the P aero a Post Office and tbe other from the travelling post office, were deposited in the container on. Saturday and would not have been dealt with until > Monday morning or Sunday afternoon. The theft was first discovered when a settler, W. Smith, who was collecting wood on the river bank, about 800 yards below the Post Office, saw a mail bag caught up in- some rushes on Lbo bank. He immediately communicated with the mail carrier and when tbe bag was recovered it was found that-every letter had boon opened and then replaced in one of the lags, which had been placed in a second bag and thrown into the river. The postmaster in I’aefoa was communicated with and, together with the police, visited the scene and made a thorough search for further mail matter.
