“ A MILK WAR.”

LOWER PRICES AT AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, August 26

A milk war is threatened in Auckland owing to the activities of a newlyformed distributing organisation. Offers are being made to deliver milk to householders at a price much lower than that charged by established firms. These firms, while admitting that they expect competition, state that they cannot any lowering of prices beyond the usual spring reduction. Increased supplies enable vendors to make an annual reduction in spring, and this is to take effect from Saturday. Bottled milk is to be reduced from 7d to G-Jd a quart, while the price of can delivered milk will drop from ff}d to 6d. The new organisation, which claims to represent a number df associated farmers, has already canvassed a large number of householders offering to supply milk at 4£d a quart.

Questioned on the matter, Mr G. E. Tanslov, president of the Milk Vendors’ Association, admitted that competition was expected, hut he said lie was unable to make any statement as to the attitude to be adopted by members of his association. The manager of the Auckland Milk Company, Air R. Smith, said he did not attach much importance to the matter. He held that it would be impossible to supply milk up to the present hygienic standards at a price lower than Gd a quart.
