CANBERRA, Aug. 27.

The Bruce Government’s position on the Arbitration- Court Abolition Bill is by no means assured, as the result of the defection of Mr W. M. Hughes and Mr Mann. The latest Government members to announce their intention to vote against the measure are Messrs Maxwell and Stewart, which reduces the Government’s normal majority to four. At least five other Government members are regarded as doubtful, and it is not unlikely that the Speaker will 'be called upon to resolve the situation. A section of the press is demanding that Mr W. I M. Hughes should resign and face the electors. The Federal political outlook is regarded as being full of possibilities.

THE NEW TAXATION.

The recent pronounced slump in movie and brewery shares on the Exchange, was short-lived, as there was a sharp recovery this afternoon on all picture concerns when it was announced that the increased Federal taxation would be passed on to the public. Brewery shares also made a marked recovery. ,

LONDON, Aug. 27

The Commonwealth of Australia is inviting tenders on Thrusday for five million Treasury Bills, with a currency of one year.
