SHEEPOWNERS MEET.

WELLINGTON, August 28.
The annual meeting of the Sheepowners Federations has opened, Mr Ada ml presiding. The report covered the activities of the year, chiefly dealing with such work as was being carried out -by the Department, Cawthron Institute, etc., in connection with animal troubles and weeds.
The executive felt justified in continuing to. take every possible means of stressing the need for the. maintenance of the present restrictions on importation from disease affected countries. * ,
MAIN HIGHWAYS
CHRISTCHURCH, August 28
A gathering of Canterbury local bodies and motoring organisations today resol ut ion ed emphatically protesting against the proposal' of the Government to withhold the annual grant of £200,C00 from the Public Works Fund to Main. Highways Construction Fund, and also the annual grant of £35,000 from the Consolidated Fund to the Main Highways Revenue Fund, as being a serious breach of faith. . ! THE ST. CLAIR MURDER. !■■ A FURTHER REMAND. DUNEDIN. August 28. William Henry Brauiuan, charged with the murder of his wife at St. Clair by shooting on August 7th, was further remanded till September 11. ' CONSTABLE FINED. DUNEDIN, August 28, ' Leonard Gurlick, a police constable, was fined £2 for being on the premises of Port Chalmers Hotel. •
A sergeant gave evidence that defendant was on night duty at the time. Witness saw the door opened by the licensee and defendant stepped, out in uniform.;' - • >'• - '
Defendant said he . had entered ithe hotel and taken the naro'es o*f men in the bar on a piece of paper. He. was neither drinking nor loitering in the hotel. , I V ■ • ‘
i The Magistrate said the sergeant’s evidence was corroborated by another constable and lie held defendant was unlawfully on the premises.' ‘ '• '•
MTETING OF CREDITORS. ' WELLINGTON, August 28. When a meeting of creditors of William Peppdrill, confectioner, of Willis Street, was held to-day. it was stated the bankrupt had disappeared, and it : had been necessary -to make him. % bankrupt bv ’.'.advertisement. The creditors, lmd .formerly treated him with consideration, but now -they/were' not. sp sympathetic, They decided, however, that' it • wps hardly worth while to take drastic steeps.
