The concert and 'ball in the Rimn Town Hall last evening was highly successful" from all viewpoints. The programme presented embraced a splendid variety of items, each performer being warmly .received by the appreciative audience. Jn addition to the alteration in the Midland railway time-table for passenger trains, there‘is also to be a reorganisation of the goods train service east and west. The effect of this, according to one report, will cut out the daily arrival here of the Christchurch papers,, owing to the night train leaving Christchurch prior to the morning papers going to press. On t'he other hand the arrival of the Dunedin newspapers will be facilitated, reaching here in the morning (following publication instead of the evening (is at present. The reason for the reorganisation of the train service is said to be the more economical handling of the traffic which is increasing and it is stated that a saving estimated at £B',ooo per annum, will be possible* by the changes to take effect as from the 16th September next. The passenger traffic on the line. at present due to holiday excursion fares is considerable, and heavily laden trains have been running of late. !
The Winter Show in Christchurch passed off most successfully. It was concluded on Saturday night in the presence of a record attendance. Mr Evnns, who went across to supervise the dismantling of the Westland stand, states every courtesy was extended by the officials, who were pleased to have the co-operation from this side of the range. During the show period 7,500 leaflets and publications were distributed from the Westland stand, while many enquiries were made about trips and tours. The display of photographs etc. of Westland scenery was admired greatly and the stand was the centre of a good deal of interest during the progress of the show. Mr Marriner, organiser, expressed pleasure at the visit of the scKool children, apd the Christchurch folk were prepared to extend the fullest opportunity to the West Coasters, and would have been glad to accommodate many more. The organiser -also stated if Westland carred to enter a district bay, provision would be made on the schedule and the same liberal terms offered in the case of the Canterbury bays.
