CARTERTON, Aug. 27. ’

An attempt was made’ some' tinie early on Sunday, by some person or persons unknown, to wreck the stopbank guarding the Ruamahanga river at a' point near Stuart Reid’s residence at Kahutara. At the time' the river "was high and a flood running to within six feet of the top of the bank, xiie perpetrator’s act' was to cut a; breach 20ft. long and 6ft. deep in the hope that the ybiter would do the rest and flood C. Elgar’s property as welLas that of other, residents' living further down the valley. Luckily the flood water had reached' its height and only a trickle came through: Had the attempt succeeded 3000 sheep and hundreds of head of cattle belong to Elgar, as well as stock on J. D. Sutherland’s and Mrs L. Sinclair’s farms; besides, many others would destroyed. There is also every probability that .human life would have been lost too. Luckily the attempt was unsuccessful and it is now in the hands of the police. -

It is understood that a detective is making enquiries and ’ that further developments are likely as a result.
