FEMALE ASSAULT CHARGE,

PALMERSTON N., Aug. 26.
When Frederick George Paulsen was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with committing an aggravated assault on a female, the police asked for a. remand until Thursday. They opposed any . bail stating the woman assaulted was accused’s mother..
Counsel for accused made an application for hail, characterising the police action in this. respect as. extraordinary, whereupon Seriior-Sergt. Whitehouse said depositions , might have been taken., A remand was granted and bail allowed in sureties of £SOO. ■ '

The accused) who pleaded guilty, (gave as his reason for his departure ifrom the institution, that he had been .insulted by the nursing staff. The Magistrate sentenced Simmiss to 12 mopths’ imprisonment.'
HIT BY MOTOR-CAR. ' CHRISTCHURCH, August 27. Patrick Minogue, aged 18, of Sumner, was knocked down by a motor car which did not stop last evening, and his leg was broken. He was found by a pedestrian some time later. v FIRE BUG AGAIN.

, Incendiarists are believed to have been at work last evening when a mysterious fire occurred in East Christ-, church school, Gloucester Street. The fire was discovered before 1 it spread far and the damage done will be comparatively small, amounting-:- to ,£SO.
