SENTENCED FOR INCEST.

At the Supreme Court this morning, Thomas Martin, a Maori, who pleaded guilty to two charges of incest, was sentenced by the Chief Justice to three yeais’ fJ hard labour to be followed by two years’ detention. ..
THEFT CHARGE.
NEW PLYMOUTH, August 27.
At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, W.illiarn Claude "White and Joseph Abraham Cleaver, charged with breaking, entering, and theft of £304 on May 24th, ifrom the shop of C. E. Ward, Ltd. were remanded till Tuesday. Bail was refused. ■
JUDGE’S REGRETS. / • GISBORNE, Aug. 27. y The Supreme Court opened this morning. Judge MacGregor ’regretted the large number of cases considerably more than. the. average for the district. He regretted also that a majority were sexual eases, and the evidence in .the same was of a revolting character, which did not speak well for the district, particularly for the Maoris. FALSE PRETENCES. AUCKLAND, August 27. At the Police Court, John George Moir, aged 33, a carpenter, appeared on two charges of false pretences and one of being a rogue and a vagabond. He was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. .... • , \ - Chief Detective / Hammond / said lie had imposed on thirty or forty charitable people at Auckland and Hamilton, obtaining small; sums of-money. Caught in the act 'of stealing clothing valued at £4 9s 6d /from a suburban shop/' Dorothy ' Balde, aged 23, pleaded guilty.- The police- stated accused ,was a waitress -out of; employ/ ment; After her arrest, a‘ room occupied by lieT was searched and found to contain .articles of/dress arid" jevvelleiy valued at between £6O and £IOO, which she confessed having sto^n/from various shops. She was reminded for sentence. v/V

It is the. meanest of thefts and is worse than shoplifting, and no good could be done in granting accused probation, said the Magistrate, in passing sentence. . : - ■
CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. CHRISTCHURCH,: August 27. In a civil case before Magistrate, Young to-day, the Mayor, Rev. J. K. Archer, appeared as defendant in a Naim"for £6:10 damages by Frederick •John Reynolds, a carrier, as a result of a collision between : the Mayor’s cav and plaintiff’s on August Ifith.; Plaintiff alleged negligent; driving by the defendant. The case is proceeding.
