Endeavouring to prevent Russians raids in Manchuria and Chalanor, Chinese troops have now removed several sections of rails of the trans-Siberian railway, thereby holding up armoured rains.; Chinese are strongly defending Chalanor mines, where observers state an. excellent series of defence works have'been constructed. ' ■/ MUNITIONS EXPLODE. SHANGHAI, August 27. One o'f the biggest munition depots'll the whole of China situated witlv.n the walls of Nanking exploded this morning. The cause at present is unknown. It is stated the explosion was probably due to the intense heat prevailing last week. "/There were continued sporadic explosions of small arms and’ cannon munition, the sounds resembling a complete- battle. It is unknown at present whether there were any casualties, or the exenf of tiie damage, though it' is reported. the ensuing- ffre is spreading The city has been placed under- ihartial law. Several arrests have been made. Seventeen are known to have been killed.
