A carnival was lecenily promoted tor the purp-.es of raisings funds lor tue U.ivcrsnaiu Sciiool, and one of the methods adopted was the running oi an art un.on. 1 his circumstance came under c.m .watcinul eye of the Council of Christian Congregations, which unanimous.y passed L..e following resolution bearing on the matter:
“That tins meeting enters an emphatic protest against the running of an art union in connexion with the oaversham public su.ojl carnival, and considers that those concerned in the organisation have done a most hensible thing in bringing the children of the school and tne community into close alliance with the gambling evil, and requests the Otago Education Hoard to make close investigations "into the matter so as to prevent a recurrence.” in the cdurse of the ■ discussion it was said that some at least of the children had not only been selling carnival ticke-s, but also art union tickets. Cne reprehensible phase of the carnival was that no person could get a ticket of admission ‘without participating in the art union, for the tickets of admission weie art union tickets. It was also stated that at least one of the games of chance. played came under the ban of the law, and that the police stopped it. A game which is illegal on a racecourse or show ground was introduced and run at the carnival by the authority of the School Committee.
