OPOSSUM SKINS
RECORD AUSTRALIAN PRICES. Brisbane advices state that at the sales in that centre a fortnight ago there was an exceptionally keen demand for all quality skins, and at times the market was excited. An extra special consignment of blues realised 205 s a dozen, -which is a price never before equalled in Briibane, the next highest price previously obtained being 192 s a dozen.
The open season for opossum killing began on July Bth. Since then there have been two auction sales oi skins. Although .the season has so recently been opened the astonishing fact remains. that at the opening sale 169,0(,'O skins were disposed of, whilst the offering at the second exceeded 295,000. In addition'it is stated in well-informed circles that fully .100,000 shins have since been disposed of by private treaty. This is barely f‘>ur weeks. Taking' the average at 72s a dozen, which is considered a conservative estimate, the value of skins sold so far amounts to £163,010. Of this sum the Government received a royalty of 5 per cent., so that the Treasury will benefit to the extent of'£B2so.
