The Surgeons’ Conference • adopted resolutions to . form a permanent organisation . lor the Pacific area,- with the headquarters at Honolulu, meeting there every three years, and including a section on . hospital standardisation. They agreed" that the present conference was an outstanding success, and were sure that a permanent organisation of. this type would contribute to a bettor. undertSanding between tlie nations.

Dr Francis emphasised the a.nce of examining tlie tonsils, even )vhen surface indications of infection were absent. He said that all patients suffering symptoms even remotely attributed to toxic absorption should have a careful nasopharynoel investigation. He was opposed to the popular belief that the tonsils should he removed in middle age, and lie also denied that a tonsil operation was likely to injure singers’ voices. Many of his patients nad had beneficial, results from it.

Dr Francis urged the surgeons to consider tonsilectony. a major operation, requiring a general anaesthetic wherever it was possible. Dr Royle described experiments illustrating an increase in muscle tone following on the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system;
