CASH ORDER TRADING

DUNEDIN, Aug. 20

“The growth in recent years of trading under the cash order system lias been a source of anxiety to retailers generally, and particularly to those engaged in the soft goods trade,” said the secretary of the Otago Eimployers’ Association, Mr A. S. Cookson,'to-day, in answer to a question bearing on the attitude of retailers towards the report on the cash order trading system, which was placed before’ the House of Representatives by a Special Committee set up to investigate the matter.

“The action of the Government in setting up the Committee of Enquiry comprising the Minister for Industries and Commerce and secretary of the Department was a most welcome irjove,” and Mr Cookson. “That these gentlemen were eminently fitted for the duties required of them is clearly indicated by the report shows .the development of this method of trading both in Australia and New Zealand. The rate of profit to the issuer of cash orders must be something of a revelation to the users of this method of making their purchases on, and it was quite apparent that regulation of some kind was badly needed.” The report was considered by the Executive of the Drapers’, Clothiers’,' and Boot Retailers’ Association at a recent„meeting, which expressed deepest satisfaction at the result of the'' enquiry, and. a resolution: “That this meeting expresses entire approval of the report and of the recommendations, made therein for the control and regulation of cash order trading,” was unanimously adopted.
