SPEECH DEFECT CLASSES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. Speech defect classes conducted for Otago Education Board by Miss Williams, have proved very effective. It was reported by the Chief Inspector today that one pupil who is deaf, and was formerly speechless,' lias learned lip reading and can now speak correctly. A similar success has been achieved in cases of stammering, cleft palate and dumbness.
THIEVES SENTENCED. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 221 For .snatching a bag from a woman at the racecourse and stealing a sum of money, Phillip Edward Fowler, a 'labourer, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Magistrate Young. - Harold Hardgrave, alias King, alias Haig, for theft of £2 and false pretences, received eighteen months’ gaol. TWO YEARS’ vREFORMATIVE. CHIIIST CHURCH, August 22 For 'stealing £BBS Alfred Earnest Craddock, aged 60, a former land agent, was to-day sentenced to reformative treatment for two years by Judge Adams.
