NELSON FARMERS’ UNION
BUDGET PROPOSALS EXPLAINED. . [By Telegraph, Per. Press Association.J ■ . WELLINGTON, August 20. When in Nelson cm Monday last the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister for Education, was approached by the executive of the Nelson provincial branch of the Farmers’ Union, and asked for information concerning the primage duly; and Budget proposals . generally. At .the' conclusion fo the meeting, the president (Mr Page) said they had to thank the Minister for mooting them and explaining the position. It certainly did not. look as .bad as some people thought. The adverse comment looked more like a party “gag”- than anything else. The Minister reiterated that the majority of farmers would not be affected, and those who were should congratulate themselves on not being taxed before. The president then moved. —“That after hearing Mr Atmore’s explanation this meeting approves of the proposals.’’ / The -resolution was carried unanimously./ ’ v \ __—— I RAILWAY LOSS. REFOIIT ON NORTHERN LINE.; : ' WELLINGTON, August 20. | After allowing, for all debit iiema including interest in-the cost of construction, the net loss on the Waio-tira-Kirikopuni railway for the periods May 25thV 1928, : to -Vlarcn 2nd, 1929, was £40,427, according to a net urn tabled in the House ■ of. Representatives to-day at the instance o,f Mr W. E. Bar-naref .(Labour,- Napier;. The return indicated that the revenue derived, from the section for the year ended March 31st last was £2494, t to which had to be added the leedi-r value to -the main lines of -traffic to and from the railway, amounting to £2648. The total, revenue credited to the. .railway was £5142. For the sajno period the ; working - expenses were . £7480. -* The. interest .on .the cost of construction of the railway, including rolling .stock, was for the same period £38,089.

After being loaded by non-union labour, the auxiliary schooner Hokianga, -which has been black-listed by the Seamen’s Union and the Onehunga waterside workers, left Oneliunga' for Hokianga to-night.
BURGLARY CHARGES. WELLINGTON,. August 21. . . Cyril Thomas Miller, aged 20 years, a labourer, • and 'Thomas Henry Hale, aged 19, were before the Court to-day, on various charges of breaking, entering and theft, and they were committed for sentence. ■ Arising out 'of the robberies committed by Miller, a seaman, Stuart Raymond McArthur, aged 23, who first met Miller at gaol in 1924, was charged with being in possession of an unlicensed pistol, and' with receiving an automatic pistol, a gold wristlet watch, and a. five-shilling piece, for which h,e ga/e, small v sums. A fine of £5, in default two months, was imposed. BICYCLE THIEF IMPRISONED. PALMERSTON N.V August 21. At the Police Court, Robert Joseph Sorenson was sentenced to fourteeij, days’ Lard labour for tho theft of a bicycle valued at £ll. - The police stated that the bicycle was taken from the passage way of an hotel.
