CABLE AND BEAM MESSAGES
LAST YEAR’S CONTRIBUTION , (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 21. Approximately fifteen million words were sent, from Australia to the United Kingdom by cable and beam last year ending March 31st. Altogether 81 per cent, of the'cheaper classes of traffic went v;a beam, two cable companies, the Pacific and the Eastern, handled more in the aggregate than in other classes of traffic, this is interpreted to imply that a large number of business firms are willing to pay the extra cost of the cablegrams in order to secure what is regarded as greater reliability and secrecy compared with wireless methods. • Press messages were almost equally divided between cable and beam.
