CONTEMPT OF COURT
.. LABOUR PAPER FINED £3OO. ' l (Australian Press Association! SYDNEY, Aug. 20. The Full Court imposed a fine of £250 on the “Labour Daily” newspaper, and one of £SO on the Editor, Mr Spedding, on the charge of contempt of court. The Full Court held there had been a real, substantial interference with the course of justice by the jpublication of certain articles which were calculated to prejudice a, fair trial of seven arrested union leaders in connection with the timber strike: when their cases were subjudice. Acting Chief Justice Ferguson said: “It has been a matter of very serious consideration for me whether we should be justified in merely imposing a fine. It is impossible to come to any other conclusion that that it was the respondents’ deliberate intention to prejudice a fair trial of the persons whose cause they were championing.”
