At the Magistrate's Comrt ‘Greymouth yesterday, n collision between two motor-cars, at the intersection of Mawhera Quay and Customs Street, on June 29, had its sequel when one of the drivers, Robert Aitken, was charged with attempting to pass a vehicle proceeding in the same direc-. tion at the intersection. After hearing evidence Mr Meldrum, S.M., said it appeared quite clear that defendant committed a. breach of Regulation 11, Clause 9, in attempting to pn«s a cyclist wifjliin a distance of 30ft from the intersection. The car was endeavouring to pass the cyclist practically in the centre of the intersection of Customs Street. He further, appears to have been committing a breach of another regulation', by not giving way to a car coming from his right. There seems no doubt that ho attempted to pass the ovolist, and he took the risk. He will be convicted and ftnpd £2, with Court costs 13s and witness’s expenses 10s.

Members interrupted to declare that that would be still worse. Mr O’Brien went on to suggest that such a newspaper should be under the control of a civil service editor charged with the.duty of guaranteeing a correct report of the doings of Parliament and full reports of membors' speeches, irrespective of party. Such a newspaper carrying Government advertisements must, he declared, he a profitapbe investment. A member: Nobody would read it. (Laughter.) vj •
