A SYDNEY CLASH

MANY MEN HURT,

(Australian Press Association)

SYDNEY, 'Aug. 18,

A fierce clavsh between police and timber pickets and strikers who ivere gathered round Hudson’s timber yards at' mid-day on Saturday, resulted in fourteen arrests and many damaged heads.-; -v? - ’ -ry The police were terribly out-num-berfed when escorting volunteer workers to trams at knock-off time. They had occasion to arrest a couple of pickets, who N aimed blows with sharpened sticks at the police. A general melee followed. Batons were drawn and were brandished right and left. The.mgn were-resisting violently, and were using shocking language.

The position at one time was extremely serious for the police, as a crowd of sympathisers at one time swelled the ranks of the strikers to nearly four thousand. Eventually the arrested men were bundled into a patrol wagon, fighting the whole time.

Jock Garden, who was the central figure, tried to quieten his men, who were singing: “Solidarity fbr Ever!” and were a howling, riotous mob. The police finally prevailed, but three of their number, including an inspector, received nasty blows on their heads, which necessitated Hospital treatment.

Fourteen of those arrested will be chaTged with either riotous behaviour or assaulting the police. All of these have been liberated on bail in sureties of £2O.
