Tlie Bank of England has issued an express denial of a. statement, emanating from New York, that thfe Bank of England has arranged for a credit of fifty millions sterling-at New York.

Dr Osborne addressed a large public session oil' thq cancer' spectre, comparing cancer to an invading arms' to which one in five falls a victim. He described the Australian fight against the disease' and predicted a ‘ victory, perhaps with this generation. Dr Osborne’s' plis’siology paper caused 5 much, discussion among surgeons as. developing a new theory regarding’ surgical shock. Dr Osborne said the idea-iVas widely held by American siirgeons that a combined local anaesthetic prevented shock. This was incorrect because ’the real cause of shock was a poison called hystamine, freed whenever a tissue was injured. Prevention should be obtained by the maximum avoidance of injuring the tissue.
