The information supplied to-day in respect to tlie works proposed in regard to tlie further development or tlie mining operations at Rimu Fiat, makes very i pleasant reading. The present Company has been operating now very successfully for a decade,' and with work for something like twenty years ahead on ground proved to be satisfactorily auriferous, the Company is about to launch out on considerable expenditure. The proposals are of a two-i’old character. There is to be an important development of the hydro-ctectric power scheme involving an expenditure of ful.y £3l),000, while in addit on, the rebuilding and reconditioning of the dredge is expected to cost £45,000, This largo expenditure is now being put in hand and demonstrates the faith of the Company in the future of the field. The Company is to be congratulated on its great enterprise which .must reflect greatly also to the benefit of the district in particular, and New Zealand in general. » There is a lnrge amount of labour involved in the works for the water-race extensi n, which will be found locally. Also the Company proposes building the new hull with New Zealand purchased material, so generally there will he a large outlay in the Dominion. The enlarged power scheme carries great possibilities in its train.- Once established, with the assured water supply Lake Kanieri affords, the power line will be'an asset to tlie district for all time, and it is reasonable to expect will be it factor in inducing various industries to take shape in our midst, and so afford more permanent employment- for an increased industrial population. The pros- | pects in the direction referred to are J very great, adding materially to the permanent future of Hokitika, which is fortunate indeed to have nriva+e enterprise taking up work of such magnitude without liability to the district itself for the creation of an invaluable asset for future general use. The Company has been of great service in maintaining the level of tlie prosperi tv, and this, expansion will add greatly to the future nroerress of the town and district. Townsfo’k generally will appreciate what is to be
done and will wish the Company all success with its great enterprise. The methods of the Company are generally such as to command success, for, careful prospecting precedesi the dredging, and ground values are known in advance. The knowledge now possessed of the intrinsic value of Rimu Flat, evidently justifies the great outlay above referred to, and gives assurance that the venture will be crowned with' success. \,e are sure the residents will wish the Company a rich reward for its enterprise.
