THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

A FUTILE MANOEUVRE. . -I > y^M The decision of the Leader'of the Opposition to move a No-Confidence motion on the Customs Amendment Bill is a palpable attempt to score a tactical advantage for partisan purposes, but it is not likely to effect its object. In the first place, the primage duty at which the attack is aimed, has been imposed and collected regularly by the Reform Government, and it is ridiculous to suggest that an increase of 1 per cent, is heavy enough to be passed on to the consumer or to make any appreciable difference to the cost of living. Obviously Mr Coates is using this expedient simply to experiment upon the Labour P?rty and discover what line they are prepared to take if the House divides. ' —Auckland Star. ■
