WHILE WARD OF THE STATE. By Telegraph-—Press Assn., Copyright WHANGAREI, August 14. An unusual case'—the first of its kind in North Auckland—was heard in the Waipu Court yesterday, when Fred ericlc Brooks was charged under Section 24, of the Child Welfare Act Amend ment, 11/27, with having unlawful intercourse with a girl who was the ward of the State. The girl, who was licen sed to accused’s wife for domestic duties, was stated to be an expectant mother.

The Magistrate, Mr Morris, stressed the fact that the drastic nature of tlr penal clause was not generally known. He requested that it be given publicityin order to emphasise the serious character of the offence.

Brooks having made a “frank admission of the facts and the proceedings being probably unique he was let off lightly-with a fine of £ls.
