FOUND DRUNK IN MOTOR OAR. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Aug. 13 After attending a function at .the Officers’ Club in honour of the officers of the French cruiser, Charles Stanley Clark was found in his car asleep in an intoxicated condition, with another man also under the influence of liquor. He was arrested. It was explained in Court that Clark had realised he was not in a condition lo drive and had therefore decided to rest in the car, but had fallen asleep. The Magistrate thought a fine would meet the case and imposed a fine of £2O. INJURED BY EXPLOSION. WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. David Cherry, employed by the Public Works Department, while using a pick at the summit of the Rimutukas, ■ struck a plug of gelignite which exploded injuring him in the face, neck arms and right eye, besides' concussion and shock. An extensive overhaul and refit is to be given to the Union Company s inter-colonial passenger steamer Marama in dock in Auckland. Tie vessel is due here from Sydney to-mor-row, and after her cargo has been discharged she wil} be withdrawn from tlie service. The work otf overhauling the Marama will occupy two months and she' is : not scheduled to resume running until October llth. This will be the first time that the Union Company has had an intercolonial passenger steamer overhauled in Auckland, and the work will give employment to a considerable number of engineers, boilermakers, fitters, carpenters, -painters, and labourers. WELLINGTON, August 14. The local Chamber of .Commerce disr cussed the primage duty increase. The Chairman said this would be a big importing year and there 'was no necessity for -an increase. Othere speakers said 2-j- per cent would be added if the increase were imposed to make up for losses of the past in not passing the whole primage duty on to the public. The chamber decided to send a resolution on these lines to Sir Joseph Ward. CHILD KILLED AT TAKAKA. ‘ NELSON, August 13. Graham Haase, aged five years, son of Mi' W. H. Haase, of Takaka, was killed instantaneously while attempting to cross Commercial Street, Takaka. DROWNED IN BATH. WELLINGTON, August 12. Late this afternoon Patrick Leo Fox aged 5, was found drowned in the Wellington College baths. Fox had been playing about the college grounds with another boy, aged 3, who apparently was- the sole witness of the accident amp 1 it is not known how it occurred Rhys and masters tried for an hour to resuscitate Fox, who is believed to have been ill the water for half-an-hour.
