The Westport Times states a sharp earthquake shock was experienced at 4.20 on Monday morning. It was preceded by a very loud rumble. One of the oldest residents of Deh,niston, Mrs Isabella Learmouth, died in the Denniston Hospital on Monday at the, age of 78 years. The late l Mrs Learmouth had been a resident of Denniston for 42 years. Her,husband predeceased her two years ago. She leaves two sons, and four daughters. At Monday evening’s meeting of the Sumner • Borough Council the Town Clerk (Mr J. F. v Menziosj reported that another stick of explosive had been found in the coal winch was to be used at’ the gas works. Cr. H. W. At the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouth, yesterday, Greaves, alias Kiriwi Perene, alias Bob Marsh, alias McKenzie, appeared in custody to answer three charges as follows: (1) That on July 29, at Hokitika, being a person released on probation under the provisions of the Crimes Amendment Act, 1910, he did com-

mit a breach or non-dbseryance of the conditions of his probationary license, by procuring liquor and entering 1 licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order, under the Licensing Act, 1908, made agairist him; (2) that on or about August 3, at Hokitika, he committed a breach of his probationary license, by changing liis address without the consent of the Probation Officer at Hokitika; (3) that, on August 1C at Greymouth, he'committed a breach of his probationary license by entering licensed premises. After hearing evidence Greaves was convicted and fined £1 on each of the three charges. At the Westland County Council meeting yesterday afternoon- Mr James Donovan made a lengthy speech in- moving a notice of. motion in reference to the Okarito hai-bour improvement.
