NEW ZEALAND BUTTER
CANADIAN AND UNITED STATES ATTITUDE. AUCKLAND, Aug. 12. Mr Norton Francis, of Christchurch, returned by the Makura from a (business trip to the United States and Canada. He is accompanied by his wife and daughter, and will leave for Christchurch to-morrow evening. Mr Francis does not view very favourably the prospects of extending the market for New Zealand primary products in Canada. The population was not large enough to warrant large importations, and it was only natural that Canada should wish to be selfsupporting. He understood 'that some New Zealand butter had been imported recently in the United States, chiefly due to the pending rise in the tariff. However, he considered that the chances of building up a large export business were remote. Both the United States and Canada were going to try to keep New Zealand butter out.
“Everything in the United States seemed very prosperous;” Mr Francis said. “The farmers, however, are complaining of the high prices they have to pay for goods and the low prices they receive for their own products. In the industrial centres there is great activity, and people are looking forward confidently to another successful business year.” Mr Francis said he visited several chambers of commerce in his capacity ag president of the Canterbury body. All were anxious to co-operate, and showed great interest in New i Zealand activities.
