During /temporary absence of the owner and occupier J. Martin, an eight-roomed farm house near Oj unake was completely destroyed by fire with all contents, in the early hours of Sunday morning. INQUEST VERDICT

HAWERA, Aug. 12

A verdict of accidental death, no biame b6ing attachable to the driver of the lorry, was returned at the inquest this afternoon on Madeline Mack, aged 6 years, who died at Hawera Hospital on August 3rd. from injuries received when she ran inlo a motor lorry on July 31st. at Okaiuua. The evidence showed that the child was playing on the side of the roadway, and ran towards the middle of the road, where she co lided with the side of the lorry when it was travelling slowly on its correct side. w

STRANDED SCHOONER

AUCKLAND, Aug. 12

It is hoped that the schooner Paroto, which is ashore at White Island, will be refloated on Wednesday. Leaks in the bottom of the hull, caused by the boulders on the beach, are being temporarily repaired, and further gear, including a large pump, is being sent from Auckland.

The Federal Line steamer Nertford, which left Auckland for Napier this evening, put back to port from Hauraki Gulf for repairs to her engines. She is expected to sail again to-mor-row morning.

PALMERSTON N., August 10

At the Police Court, Henry Brewerton Harford, aged 24, pleaded guilty to the theft of £2B, the property of Combined Motor Services. He was admitted to probation for two years. An application for the suppression of his name was refused, the Magistrate stating that in his opinion the right of suppression should only be for juveniles. The publication of names was part off the punishment, particularly where probation was granted instead of imprisonment.
