A SHOPLIFTER. (By Telegraph—Pet Press Association;) AUCKLAND, Aug. 12. Adelaide Smailfield, aged 29 years, a married woman, was charged at the Police Court on five counts of stealing goods from shops. She pleaded guilty anu was fined £2O. Her thefts ranged over a period of a fortnight, a number of city shops being visited. Her counsel raised a plea of the woman’s health, but ithe Magistrate, Mr Hunt, said he might have been able to accept that explanation if there had oeen only one charge. Higgins, who succeeded General Bramwell Booth in command of tlie Army, will arrive in Wellington in February.
