Mr 'Amery said: “Empire fried trade is ah Ideal, but it is quite impracticable.” Re said hie absolutely favoured closer fcommercial relations between the CoristitUtent parts of the Empire. He t nevertheless felt that the slogan of free trade would not accomplish the purpose desired in the Old Country. For example, they could not tax wheat in order to give Canada preference, and it was inconceivable that Canada, in various ways might not find it convenient to reduce her taxation on one purely British product. -Each commodity must be considered by itself. Preference could be arranged for Canadian &'he&t, perhaps, by a subsidy or by de? et'eased freight rates, blit they; cohid npt be,Of such a nature that they would increase the British cost of living.
