It is reported tliat after the steamer Bendigo left Fremantle, the passengers held an indignation meeting to protest against the statements of Collingwood Hughes, ex-Comnioner, who was a passenger with his wife,' and had made condemnatory statements about the class of migrants voyaging to Australia in the ship. Hughes was in his cabin with a locked door, and refused to attend the meeting, though ex-ser-vicemen aboard promised protection. He was prevailed on to write an apology for the .references to Australia House and medical officers concerned, but denied using some of the words attributed to him. Later, Hughes under escort, attended a meeting of passengers who received his verbal apology in intense silence.
