Questioned here regarding reports that work on the Singapore naval base might be abandoned by the British Labour Government, Aljr Winston Churchill said: “Such a policy would undoubtedly he supported,by the Liberals,” Hut he added that it was a fact that Australia and New r Zealand had actually contributed more, towards the construction of the.base than did Britain. “It is unfair to take people’s money on the promise of doing something and then not to carry out the promise,” he said. 1 Mr Churchill stated that he regarded Singapore as a highway and an important link in the Empire, and he was thoroughly in accord with its continuance.
