The representation of Westland at the Christchurch Winter Show and Industrial Exhibition now in progress appears to be giving a good deal of satisfaction to our East Coast friends. Reports indicate that there is a very cordial feeling expressed'at the fact that Westland has gone across to .attract, interest in itself. The display made is chiefly in regard to the scenic attractions of the district, and in that respect there is of course splendid materia] to work upon. One interesting fact is the interest Coasters are taking in the display. We understand that on the opening many ex-Coasters. made tneir way to the stand, and from homey consideration no doubt took a special interest in its welfare. The Coasters are therefore going to be potential advertisers of the district, and appear to be united in the effort to draw the stand to the notice of others. It appears evident that the district will have quite a good advertisement from its stand, for in addition to the verbal praise, the newspaper publicity is considerable, and that information of course is carried far and wide. The movement in regard to the advertising of the scenic attractions of the district should therefore bear a very excellent fruit. What can be achieved in that direction might well be an incentive to attract notice outside the district to other features of Westland, which stands in urgent need of more publicity. It appears to ,us if the matter were taken up betimes, Westland could and should participate in the District Bay Competitions at the Winter Show. There is such a variety here that a very varied display could be made, and in the general interests of the district, it should be made. The help of the settlers, we feel sure, could be enlisted, and from me fine showing which is made at the Kokatalii Winter Show, there is an idea of what an extra display could, be made. Those who cross to the Winter Show in Christchurch during the next fortnight, and see what is done, could form their own ideas as to how far Westland could'emulate those special displays. We believe the district could make a very respectable showing, and at the same time do more to advertise the resources of the district than by any other ready means. The timber and mineral wealth of the district are all too little known, and these resources supplementing the produce of the land in both pastoral and dairying pursuits, would make a very dbra-ve display indeed. This is a matter which might well be taken up, but to organise effectively with a view to the best results, an early start should be made, and by apportioning the work the labour would not be heavy on any, yet the aggregate result would be a surprisingly fine result, for the material is at hand here.
