OLD WRECK FOUND
MISSING OVER A TEAR.
REMAINS OF SCOW HERALD, AUCKLAND, August 7.
The' mystery surrounding the disappearance of the scow Herald after the vessel struck Canoe Rock, off Kawau Island, on the morning ot July 14 last year, was unexpectedly solved last Friday, when the missing essel was located in deep water by the trawler Thomas Currell.
After the mishap at Canoie Rock the crew scrambled ashore, to be rescued some hours afterwards by the steamer Tofua, outward bound from Auckland to the Islands Meanwhile, the schooner slipped off the rock and drifted away to the eastward. The Thomas Currell was trawling last Friday in deep water between Canoe Rook and Channel Island, u •onsidernble distance from the nearest land. The trawl partially enmeshed the wreck and it was brought up near the surface. The wreck broke away when fifteen fathoms from the surface, but the main gaff, with various blocks and tackles, was hauled to the surface, and from these the identity of tlie wreck was known.
The master of the trawler took bearings-, which fixed the position of the Wreck as eleven miles east of Canoe Rock. The leadline showed 27 fathoms of water, and thus the wreck will not 'be a danger to passing sea traffic. The Thomas Currell kept on trawling, and got bade to port this morning. At the time of the wreck the Herald was bound from Whangarei to carrying 73 tons of coal. The scow did about five knots down the coast and the visibility was fair. Hie vessel struck shortly before dawn through missing stnvs wlmn vmsing to windward of the rock. The crew scrambled on to the rock and soon after the Herald freed herself and drifted away in an easterly direction. Later search was made for the scow, but as no trace could be found it was presumed that she had been severely holed in striking on the rocks and sank soon after drifting away. The discovery made last Friday bv the trawler shows that the Herald drifted about eleven miles after striking Canoe Rock,
