PUBLIC ACCOUNTS

(RETURN FOR LAST QUARTER , (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The Public Accounts for- the first quarter of the present financial year (the three months ended June 30th.) are published in a supplementary Gazette to-night. No official statement by Sir Joseph Ward, Minister of Finance, is being made thereon, as the position has been dealt with, to a large extent, in his recent Bridget, , and the first quarter gives but little indication of the activities of ,the remainder of . the year.

The receipts of the Consolidated Fund Ordinary Revenue Account (shillings and peace omitted), with the figures for the corresponding period of last year, are as follows: Balance at the beginning of the year:—Cash in the Public Account £2,315,380 (£1,729,392); Imprests outstanding: In the Dominion £24,994 (£94,499) 'and in London, £110,885 (£160,539); Investment Account: Securities held £2280 (£1,207,800); Temporary Transfers under Section 40 of the Public Revenues Act, 1926, nil (£llO,000) ; totals £2,543,540 (£3,302,231) ; grand total of receipts £7,893,519. On the expenditure side, the Permanent Appropriations total £3,798,232 (£3,386,243); under special Acts: Legislature £1,212,403 (£1,063,515); Annual Departmental Appropriations £1,877,810 (£1,832,400); balance-at the end of three months £890,191 , (£l,658,210).
