August 9. • The Ivekarangu left Port Chalmers last night for Hobart and when about 23 miles south of Cape Saunders, William Luker, aged 50, a fireman, died suddenly. After hearing the facts, Mr Page, S.M., said: I will have to impose a heavy penalty in this case. For two years past the Department has rendered defendant, who is a wealthy man, default assessments on land valued at £54,000 and defendant let' these go. Although in the meantime he knew he had acquired more land, bringing the value up to £68,000, the defendant said nothing and avoided an addiional tax of £BOO for over two years.
