DEATH ON SHIP. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN. August 9. • The Ivekarangu left Port Chalmers last night for Hobart and when about 23 miles south of Cape Saunders, William Luker, aged 50, a fireman, died suddenly. Deceased was dumping ashes when lie had a seizure and soon afterwards expired. The deceased was a native of Brisbane. The Kekaranga returned to port with the body. -AN INCENDIARY FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. It is now believed that incendiarists caused the fire in an empty dwelling at Papanui last night as a neighbour heard footsteps in the house three minutes before the fire, which came out with a burst. BRAUMEN’S CONDITION UNCHANGED. DUNEDIN, Aug. 10. Braumen’s condition is unchanged. It is not critical, though he suffered severely from the wound and a great loss.of blood The police are enquiring into the identity of the man who was reported to be within a few yards of the scene of the tragedy, whose evidence as an eye-witness is valuable. , * ' FAILURE TO' FURNISH RETURNS. WELLINGTON, August 9. Charles Th'om,as Keeble to-day pleaded guilty to failure to furnish returns of land. It was stated for the - Department that there was not only information, but the history of the defendant’s relations with the Department Ishowlod the ,casef was more serious than usual. After hearing the facts, Mr Page, S.M., said: I will have to impose a heavy penalty in this case. For two years past the Department has rendered defendant, who is a wealthy man, default assessments on land valued at £54,000 and defendant let' these go. Although in the meantime he knew he had acquired more land, bringing the value up to £68,000, the defendant said nothing and avoided an addiional tax of £BOO for over two years. This was < subsequently paid. A fine of £IOO was imposed with costs. . David Daily was fined five pounds, and Alfred Ernest Ellery and Thomas Ellery, £2 on.similar charges.!
JOY RIDER SENTENCED.
AUCKLAND, August 9,
Selwyn Theodore ‘ a young garage mechanic who drove a party of young people to a Hamilton dance in a car which didn’t belong to him and had two collisions, was sentenced by Mr Hunt to three years probation, was ordered to pay £SO damages to the motor cars, and his driving • lidense was cancelled for five years.
FRENCH CRUISER. WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The French cruiser, now lying at Wellington, is creating considerable interest, large numbers of people being gathered about the ship this morning. Yesterday’s official calls were returned. Sir Joseph Ward, was accompanied by a number of Cabinet Ministers, and the Mayor by several City Councillors. The captain and officers were entertained at luncheon at Parliament House. '
