DARGAVILLE, August 7. • The deatli took place last night of Gilbert Nelson Hayes, a well-known solicitor of the firm of Hayes Mitchell and Goulding. Deceased was born at Wainiate, Canterbury, and came to this district twenty-three years ago, where lie set up in practice with E. T. Field. He was senior counsel of the Dargaville Bar and was recognised as a clever pleader. He took a keen interest- in local affairs, and was a member of the Kaipara Licensing Committee. He also served for some years on the Fire Board. He was an enthusiastic free mason and gave freely to all causes of charity. An outstanding gift was the post office clock, erected at a cost of over £IOOO. He is survived by a widow and two young children. A SERIOUS CHARGE. GISBORNE, Aug. 7. At the Police Court, Frederick James Hardy, aged 48, pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence on a charge of a serious offence against his daughter aged 18.
