FAMILY ALLOWANCES ACT' (By Telegraph—Per,Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 7. All parties were represented at a deputation of members of Parliament which waited on Hon W. Veitcli (Minister of Pensions) to urge the Family Allowances Act should he amended to permit .women deserted by their husbands to apply for an allowance. The Minister undertook to gT; e the matter sympathetic consideration and, oring it before Cabinet. Air W. E. Barnard said that at present mothers were not allowed to apply for an allowance, and this made it very difficult for wives who had been deserted. The allowance was not intended for the father hut for the benefit of the family.
.Messrs C. E. MaeMillan and W. J. Jordan supported this. D. McDougall agreed with the amendment, but said many women were fond of gallivanting round and would sooner spend the 2s they received on a visit to the pictures than on two loaves of bread. The Minister would have to guard against these.
